CHENNAI

A city of Contrasts and diversities was known world wide as Madras until recently, the city was renamed Chennai, evolved from the age-old name, Chennapattinam.

The city grew into modern day Madras City merging all neighboring areas. After independence in 1947 it became the capital of Madras State that was renamed Tamil Nadu. 

The East India Company developed Chennai as one of the major trading centers in India. Chennai has a blend of Dravidian and Gothic architecture in its buildings. The city might have grown but it has never lost its traditional grace and charm. With a population of over 6 million people, Chennai is a vibrant city ever growing, expanding and changing every year.

By Air : Chennai is an international airport connected by several international airlines including Air India, British Airways, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Air Lanka and Malaysia Airlines while Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines etc handle the domestic traffic. There are regular flights to several cities around the world from the International Terminal. There are also daily flights to all-important centers in India from the Domestic Terminal. Kamaraj National and Anna International Airports are situated at Meenambakkam about 20 kms from the city

By Rail : There are two major railway stations in Chennai. Chennai Central is the bigger one and connects the city by broad gauge as also broad gauge trains to all major cities and towns of India. The Egmore station is the starting point for both metre gauge and broad gauge trains proceeding to destinations within the state as well as trains to neighbouring Kerala. 

Road : Getting to Chennai by Road is more fun and convenient primarily due to the five major national highways that branches out to cities like Bangalore, Trichy, Kolkata and Pondicherry.

Chennai was developed as a British trading post, and as such, most of its attractions have a distinct colonial influence. Stretched over an area of 13 km, Marina beach is the second longest beach in the world. The St. George Fort, built in 1653, is currently used as the state government/ís secretariat. Santhome Cathedral was built around 14th/15th century and is another colonial structure worth visiting. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Kapaleeshwar Temple is the oldest temple in Chennai. Another important temple in the city dedicated to Lord Krishna is Parthsarathy temple.
