The teaching ground (Jiwe-tsal) in Shey is 8 km from Leh town. The roads will be made one-directional and new roads will be constructed for better connectivity. Kalachakra car parking has parking plots in four different directions that can accommodate as many as 4000 vehicles each.
No vehicle is allowed in the proximity of the venue. Therefore from the car parking to the teaching ground you will walk, it takes around 20 to 30 minutes.
Registration Assistance
The participations in the Kalachakra initiations are free of charge and there is no need for an advance booking. However, the registration is compulsory for all the participants. Therefore, you are advised to bring a copy of your passport in case of foreign nationals, voters Id card for Indian nationals and RC for Tibetans residing in India and two passport size photographs for the registration.
The registration counters will be setup at the LBA office in the main market and also at the teaching ground. The registration process will start prior to the teaching commencement and continue throughout the teaching period.
Seating Arrangement [First come first served basis]
The venue at Jiwe-tsal (which literally means Peace Garden) in Shey, around 8 km away from Leh, can accommodate as many as 150,000 participants. One-third of the area will be covered under roof (tent) in order to protect from the sun and summer heat.
There are seating areas earmarked for monks and nuns, foreign devotees and the devotees from different parts of India and the Himalayan regions. The seating is usually reserved on a first come first served basis. The seating will be on the floor at the teaching ground.
We will provide you a cushion or mat as it will not be provided by the organisers. Our escort will guide you from the car parking to the teaching ground and wherever you require assistance from them.

How many days you want to stay in Leh?
Kalachakra Initiations Program Schedule as: Kalachakra initiation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Leh from July 3rd to 14th 2014. During the first three days of the Kalachakra, from July 3 to 5, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, along with the monks of Namgyal Monastery and senior lamas, will conduct rituals which prepare and consecrate the venue. These include chanting of prayers, creation of the sand mandala and other rituals.
- From July 6 to 8, His Holiness will give preliminary teachings.
- On July 9, the Kalachakra Ritual Dance will be performed by the monks of Namgyal Monastery.
- His Holiness will confer the Kalachakra Initiation from July 10 to 13.
- On July 14, a long life empowerment (tsewang) and a ceremony offering prayers for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be performed.
Preferred location for Accommodation and their quality?
Generally we recommend and provide accommodation in Leh town, 8 km from the venue (Shey) because in Leh you will find good accommodation quality. But as per your choice we can arrange accommodation near Shey [Venue of Kalachakra] in Guest house or Home – stays according to your dates and availability. You can’t compare these rooms quality with Leh Hotel but clean & comfortable for the guest.
What are the rates for accommodation?
Rate will be depending on the number of days in your hand? If you stay longer then prices come reasonable and for short periods prices will be high.
Mode of transport for Leh from New Delhi?
By Road distance from New Delhi to Ladakh is around 1050 takes about 20 Hrs drive.
Option 1. Travel by Air is best way to reach Leh but prices goes much higher during 25 June to 25 July prices approx US$ 750 to US$ 850 return Airfare for per person in economy class. Option2. You will travel by Overnight train to Jammu and from Jammu you will travel to Srinagar by road around 300 K.M. Overnight stay at Srinagar and next day morning proceed for Ladakh via kargil distance around 400 K.M with an overnight halt at Kargil.
Option 3.You will take flight from Delhi to Srinagar. Next day proceed by surface to Leh via kargil distance around 400 K.M with an overnight halt at Kargil. Or Take flight from Srinagar to Leh.
Option 4.You will travel by overnight Volvo Coach Journey to Manali from Delhi distance around 600 KM. It will take approx 10 Hrs journey. Stay 01 day at Manali and next day proceed to Leh by private car takes about 19 hours or two days with an overnight halt in camps at Sarchu or Pang.

The word of kalachakra means time cycles and it represents three cycles – external, internal and alternative. Two cycle the external and internal deal with time as we normally know it, while the alternative cycles are practices for gaining liberation from these two. The structures of the external and internal cycles are analogous, similar to the parallel between macrocosm and microcosm discussed in Western philosophy. This means that the same rule that govern a universe also pertain to atoms, the body and our experience of life.

In Buddhism Time is defined as a measurement of change. For example, a month is the measurement of change involved either externally in the moon circling the earth or internally in a woman going from one menstruation to the next. Such changes are cyclical in that the pattern repeats, although the events of each cycle are not completely identical. Externally, the universe passes through cosmic, astronomical, astrological and historical cycles.

On an internal level, the body goes through physiological cycles, many of which bring about associated mental and emotional cycles as well. Furthermore, just as universes form, expand, contract, disappear and then form once again, individual beings pass through continuing rebirths with repeated conception, growth, old age and death.

Normally the passage of time exercises a debilitating effect. As we age, our sight, hearing, memory and physical strength gradually weaken and eventually we die. Due to compulsive attachment and confusion about who we are and how we exist, we take rebirth without any control over its process or circumstances, each time having to relearn everything we knew before. As each of our lives unfolds over the course of time, karmic potentials from our previous actions ripen at appropriate astrological, historical and life-cycle moments into the various events we experience. Some of these are pleasant, but many are not. We seem to have little choice about what happens in life.

In short, the external and internal cycles of time delineate samsara – uncontrollably recurring rebirth, fraught with problems and difficulties. These cycles are driven by impulses of energy, known in the Kalachakra system as “winds of karma.” Karma is a force intimately connected with mind and arises due to confusion about reality. Imagining that ourselves, others and everything around us exist in the way our mind makes them appear – as if with concrete, permanent identities established from within each being or thing – we act on the basis of this confusion with attachment, anger or stubborn foolishness.
